ARA-290 is an 11-amino acid helix B surface peptide (HBSP) derived from the non-erythropoietic portion of erythropoietin (EPO). It is designed to selectively activate the Innate Repair Receptor (IRR) — a tissue-protective heteroreceptor complex consisting of the EPO receptor subunit (EPOR) and the common beta chain (CD131/βc) — without activating the homodimeric EPOR (EPOR2) complex responsible for erythropoiesis.

This receptor selectivity allows ARA-290 to deliver the cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and neuroregenerative benefits of EPO without the hematopoietic side effects (thrombosis risk, polycythemia) that limit therapeutic EPO use.
