Product Overview

Botulinum Toxin Type A is a 150 kDa zinc-dependent endopeptidase neurotoxin produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is internalized into presynaptic motor nerve terminals via receptor-mediated endocytosis, after which its light chain is translocated into the cytoplasm where it cleaves SNAP-25 at a specific Gln197-Arg198 peptide bond within the SNARE complex.

Cleavage of SNAP-25 irreversibly disrupts SNARE complex assembly, preventing fusion of acetylcholine-containing synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane and producing neuromuscular blockade lasting 3–6 months until nerve terminal regeneration occurs. Supplied as research-grade material, it is studied in cholinergic neurotransmission, neurotoxin mechanism research, and as a model for targeted synaptic protein cleavage.
